I was commissioned by Orijin Advertising to create various paper installations and table decor for this awards ceremony sponsored by MNET. This included a central installation in the foyer, origami horses, birds and candle holders for the16 tables, as well as a paper crown for the performer on the night. Three artworks were also purchased and auctioned off to raise funds for the Naledi Childrens Trust on the night.

Building a tree from paper was a huge amount of fun. Luckily there was a rather large plastic chandelier in the foyer that could be used as a base and a big, round table to place the frame for the trunk on. This made things much easier as I just bought in all the bits ready to be installed.

I started by winding a wire frame round the chandelier to attach the paper bunting (leaves) to and then wound the paper flowers round this creating the tree canopy. 32 metres of paper bunting and 20 metres of flower creeper is what it took to create this effect.

The tree trunk is made of pages attached to a frame suspended from a standing light that was placed on the table. I used about 80kg's of books around the base that were all purchased from Oasis Recycling on Landsdowne Road. All of these books were destined to be pulped and most have been in circulation in our library system fro 30 plus years judging by the worn pages and library stamps.

Additional flowers and Origami horses were then suspended from the canopy. Loose flowers were scattered around the base of tree as well. The 2 deer were cut from polystyrene and covered with pages completed the forest scene.

The Ballroom had 16 tables of 10 people - each table had a beautiful Bonsai Tree (rented for the evening) with 3 paper birds hanging in them. Around the base were 5 horses and 5 paper candle holders.

Each Bonsai is completely unique and the tables looked elegant with the bamboo under plates, white chairs and crisp whote table clothes. They managed to tone down the horrendous carpets rather beautifully.

The Three pieces up for auction in the foyer. Even fish can fly, Cry the beloved country in a perspex box and Jock of the Bushveld box framed.

Cape Town Box in Perspex - Prototype 4...

And still going
Some minor issues to clean up on this one and then we should be set to roll.
This design takes into account the fluctuations in the thickness of 3mm perspex which make it impossible to produce the 4 sided slot-in box.
BUT this design's ergonomics give me room to add in 0.3mm and it doesn't fall over.
Comes neatly packaged in the box and the hey-presto the pieces slot into the lid and there's Cape Town.

Blast from the past

I walked into my Perspex Manufacturer - Millenium Plastics - today and laughed out loud. They are moving at the end of the month and are clearing out all sorts of bits that they have been hoarding for way to long, including some perspex bangles I made about 10 years ago... sexy. ha ha. This one and the black with pink stripe were two of favourites.

FYI: Millenium Plastics are probably my favourite supplier in Cape Town and can do just about anything for you with perspex - cutting, shaping, lazer cutting, engraving and the list goes on. Currently in the Woodstock Industrial Centre but moving into Salt River at the end of the month.
