Note to self

"Those who don't believe in magic will never find it" - Roald Dahl

Will it work on canvas or a on a little shelf that attachs to the wall so it is easier to read?

Cityscape enroute to Woodheads

Peter and Jane

Found a box of the Ladybird 'Learn to read and write' books lurking in corner on the way to be recycled - near tragedy averted.  The books were printed in the same year but illustrated by 2 different artists.  Funny how the one looks a whole lot more modern (and rather coy in Jane's case) than the other.

How does it all work?

Romeo and Juliet

The hearts are hand made from the pages of the play out of the inside of the book that the paper sculpture rests on.  The base is 'Great expectations' and a book called 'How my body works'.

Completed piece - for sale in the Fringe Arts.

The swallows in zig zag

The Tree House (ready, steady, go)

Found tree rounds. Finally. Now it looks like I imagined... Now to find larger glass domes.

Daniella La Porte - White Hot Truth (A good addiction)

Makes me think... that's for sure

right now:

There are Tibetan Buddhist monks in a temple in the Himalayas endlessly reciting mantras for the cessation of your suffering and for the flourishing of your happiness.

Someone you haven't met yet is already dreaming of adoring you.

Someone is writing a book that you will read in the next two years that will change how you look at life.

Nuns in the Alps are in endless vigil, praying for the Holy Spirit to alight the hearts of all of God's children.

A farmer is looking at his organic crops and whispering, "nourish them."

Someone wants to kiss you, to hold you, to make tea for you. Someone is willing to lend you money, wants to know what your favourite food is, and treat you to a movie. Someone in your orbit has something immensely valuable to give you -- for free.

Something is being invented this year that will change how your generation lives, communicates, heals and passes on.

The next great song is being rehearsed.

Thousands of people are in yoga classes right now intentionally sending light out from their heart chakras and wrapping it around the earth.

Millions of children are assuming that everything is amazing and will always be that way.

Someone is in profound pain, and a few months from now, they'll be thriving like never before. They just can't see it from where they're at.

Someone who is craving to be partnered, to be acknowledged, to ARRIVE, will get precisely what they want -- and even more. And because that gift will be so fantastical in it's reach and sweetness, it will quite magically alter their memory of angsty longing and render it all "So worth the wait."

Someone has recently cracked open their joyous, genuine nature because they did the hard work of hauling years of oppression off of their psyche -- this luminous juju is floating in the ether, and is accessible to you.

Someone just this second wished for world peace, in earnest.

Someone is fighting the fight so that you don't have to.

Some civil servant is making sure that you get your mail, and your garbage is picked up, that the trains are running on time, and that you are generally safe. Someone is dedicating their days to protecting your civil liberties and clean drinking water.

Someone is regaining their sanity. Someone is coming back from the dead. Someone is genuinely forgiving the seemingly unforgivable. Someone is curing the incurable.

You. Me. Some. One. Now.

Aspekte Van Suid Afrika

I bought this book solely for the cover design  - fortunately it is incredibly boring inside. I have lined it with a yellow and brown schweschwe and the crown design tissue paper.  The springbok is embossed leather.

A place for cool Geeks to hide things

I designed this with a certain friend in mind who is a self confessed Geek with a lot of cool.

This book is smaller than usual with a gorgeous grey, black and white 'houndstooth' cover - the only marking is the name, Chess, on the spine.  I have lined the inside with a pattern of my own design.  The fabric is from a vintage curtain found years ago at a Church bazaar in Cape Town and the button was found in an junk shop in Graaf Reinet last year.

A place to hide things

Like James Bond and Jessica Fletcher had...  probably not lined with pink cloth though.

More Classic Books to follow lined with retro patterns, velvet and vintage fabrics. A lot less girly.

The Fairy Wagon Book - a rather worn and marked cover but it has a delightful embossed design of a fairy queen on a flower chariot being pulled by butterflies.  The inside is lined with schweschwe fabric and pages from the book.  A small cherub is attached to the inside of the lid.

A dictionary from 1930 with amazing marbling on the page edges.  This is a lovely thick book with a large space inside.  I have lined it with Schweschwe and pages from the dictionary - there is a small mussel shell on the inside cover.

Matters of the heart

Paper hearts folded from pages out of  'King Arthur'. A King with a moral compass. They rest on an old map book of the world.  Be brave, be kind and be fair.  All important matters of the heart no matter where or who you are.

King Arthur: You know the law we live by. And where is it written beyond Camelot live lesser people, people too weak to protect themselves, let them die?
Malagant: Other people live by other laws, Arthur. Or is the law of Camelot to rule the entire world.
King Arthur: There are laws that enslave men, and laws that set them free. Either what we hold to be right and good and true is right and good and true for all mankind, under God, or we're just another robber tribe.
Malagant: Your words are talking you out of peace and into war.
King Arthur: There's a peace you only find after war. If that battle must come. I will fight it!

Paper works

Paper forms grouped together to rest on blocks of salvaged wood or round discs of rough cut timber.  Cover with a glass dome if I can find one big enough.

Funny

Cindy's Tour - privately guided

My delightful friend Cindy has been out from the UK and got to spend a fun-filled 48 hours with me... I took her to exciting places like Merripak, the best 2nd hand bookstore (saw some skinny shorts trendsters there - I am concerned the secret is out) and the Fringe Arts in the Waterfront.  We sugar overloaded on Vida Iced coffees and pasteis de nata's... power food for the Waterfront.... and I restrained myself from even walking past the Country Road Sale.

The day ended with Bakoven = bizarre vibe as it was PACKED.  Really odd to see this normally quiet little beach with people perched on every available surface.  White wine spritzers and Lays plain salted all round.  The hot sun, high tides and mello light made me feel a little trippy and reminisce about trance parties I stopped going to 5 years ago.

Day 2 was dedicated to Cape Town City Central where in order I showed her my favourite stuff.
1.  The postal stone in the bottom of the Golden Acre
2.  The old Post office and the super cool central letter counter with marble tops (near GAME)
3.  The cool little street view from Church Square on Spin street with the glass walkway

4.  The tribes carved into the side of the Old Mutual Building
5.  Mr Price
6.  The Groote Kerk Floor tiles that were made on Robben Island by the Lepers when it was a Leper colony - the tiles have a salty feel to them.

7.  Deluxe for coffee and Cafe Mozart for lunch
8.  Walking the Labyrinth at St Georges Cathedral
9.  Mimi's Vintage Dresses stand at Church Street Antiques Market
10.  The lead pane windows of the Muller's Optometrists original store
11.  This shopspace that has stood empty for ages that I would love to turn into a studio/shop/gallery for many people to share and rent space for short term fun-times in real life

Obviously it was the best 5 hours of her life...

Vintage Clocks and their packaging

Made from Vintage British Airways Playing cards.  Judging by the rather cool retro design they must have been from the 60's or 70's.  Retailing at the Fringe Arts for R250.  Only 4 available with this design.
